Choosing a restaurant for an outing when you have a child with sensory issues can be daunting. Too crowded, too loud, too bright, too big-any of these things (and more) could set off their overload and trigger a horrific meltdown faster than you can say “Food!” I mentioned in this post recently that I can count on one the number of times we’ve gone out as a family since our oldest son L was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. After a few incredibly frustrating meals, it just becomes easier to avoid it altogether, but when family comes to town, sometimes you just have to make exceptions, plan the best that you can, and pray!
Having moved here from Bakersfield, CA back in 2010, my mom and I were familiar with the restaurant there that Rhythm Kitchen’s owners ran before selling and moving here. Several mutual friends had told us that the new place was a must-try, but we hadn’t really had an opportunity to check it out until now. With family visiting, we wanted something a little different than the usual Strip fare (and crowds!), not to mention of taste of home.
Their website offers online reservations through OpenTable, but I decided with L’s needs, I would feel better speaking with someone. My mom ended up being the one who called, and surprisingly she was connected right to the owner/manager, Scott. After briefly explaining the over stimulation/overload issues, Scott assured her he was happy to accommodate us and that we would be seated in their private dining room. To be honest, that is the first time we’ve ever had our requests granted that easily, and it just makes me love them that much more!
Once we were seated-in the private dining room as promised, with no one else around us and most of the sound from the main dining area blocked out, our server Ronald took amazing care! No one batted an eye when L got up and ran around the table for a minute (a common thing for SPD kids-the fidgeting/running is a way of self-regulating), or when he sat down in a different booth away from everyone for a few minutes to “get away”.
Rhythm Kitchen offers “something for everyone”, but their menu definitely leans toward the Cajun/Creole side, and it is AMAZING. You can check out their full menu online here, and make sure to check out their daily specials. They made substitutions for us with NO problems, have an awesome wine and beer list, and my mom confirmed that their mai-tai recipe is the same as the old one from Bakersfield and still just as delicious (and dangerous!) as ever! Personally, I was most excited about their selection of Tobin James wines-one of my favorite Central California wineries.
Mom’s Night Out Alert: On Monday nights, they offer 50% of their wines by the bottle!!
All in all, it was easily the most enjoyable family dinner out we’ve had since L was born, and that’s a big deal in my book! I am definitely looking forward to going back a LOT!
Rhythm Kitchen is located at 6435 S. Decatur Blvd, just north of the 215 (South). They can be reached at 702-767-8438, and I highly recommend checking out their Facebook and Twitter as well for even more info.
